Can Coffee Cure A Hangover?

September 11, 2013

Ahhh, coffee in the morning. It can help you get your day started, but can it help you if you are hungover?

In brief: yes, it often can.

If one of the causes of your hangover is dehydration, then you probably have a pretty bad headache. This is because the body pulls water out of the brain as you lose fluids, and this causes the brain to literally rub up against the membranes that hold it and connect it to the skull. The resulting inflammation gives you a nasty headache and reminds you to stay better hydrated next time.

Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, which means that it constricts the blood vessels in the brain and can help cut down on that swelling that is causing you so much pain.

And if the caffeine helps you get active in the morning then that can help as well. Most people start to feel better after they’ve gotten active and started their day.

Coffee is a known minor diuretic, which doesn’t help with rehydration, but is easily countered. Drink a hydration solution like Pedialyte or take a Brode with some water.

Reality Test

Everyone knows to drink coffee when they are hungover. It can take the edge off. But it’s really the caffeine, so even better might be to try some Excedrin, which is literally just aspirin, Tylenol, and caffeine.
